“Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.” ...Charlie Chaplin
Shambhavi Sahni
Born in 1889 and brought up in London, Chaplin rose to fame in the silent era. From a young age, Charlie underwent many hardships like poverty and his father’s absence.
He had to find work before the age of nine and even cope up with his mother’s illness. Before Charlie’s mother got sick, she was an opera singer known for her melodious voice. However, as her illness took a toll, Charlie had to take over on the stage. It was then that a star was born.
By a quirk of fate, Charlie embarked on a globally successful career. In 1972, he received a special trophy at the first Academy Awards for versatility and genius in acting, writing, directing and producing ‘The Circus’.
His career spanned more than 75 years, from childhood in the Victorian Era until a year before his death in 1977. Thus, despite big challenges, Charlie became the ‘King of Comedy’.
Charlie Chaplin’s life teaches us how hard work, perseverance and endurance played a key role in transforming the boy in rags to the man on the front page of the world famous ‘Times Magazine’.
