Formation and development of Bhikkhuni Sangha
Dr. Kavita Chauhan
Of all the distinctive features of
Buddhism, one of the most intriguing facets is the formation of bhikkhuni
sangha–order of nuns. The bhikkhuni sangha was founded five years later than
the bhikkhu sangha–order of monks. In the early stages of the bhikkhuni sangha,
bhikkhunis or nuns learnt not only various forms of disciplinary acts, but also
different aspects of knowledge from bhikkhus. Here, it must be remembered that
social and spiritual opportunities offered by the Buddha to womenwere
considered radical, during that time, and drew objections from families and
from the society that also included bhikkhus. The Buddha was well aware of the
fact that his women disciples would be constantly stressed and bullied.
