Discipline your life with morning riyaz - Part 1

Dr. Shampa Choudhury

If we are not disciplined, we can’t channelise our energy in a positive manner. To initiate discipline in our lives, music could be of great help, especially doing morning riyaz as per Hindustani classical music tradition.

One of the essential qualities of a musician is self-discipline, which has a lot to do with the daily ritual of riyaz. You need to be disciplined in order to get up every morning to practice your vocals, even if you are an accomplished singer.

Riyaz, an Urdu term, is essentially the practice of honing Hindustani classical music vocal. A singer often starts his day as early as 4 am with morning riyaz. Every singer worth his salt takes his morning riyaz very seriously, as it requires discipline, intensity and commitment for years to incorporate riyaz into your daily schedule. It is also an important component in the guru-shishya parampara(teacher-student tradition).

Let’s find out how the tradition of morning riyaz could help us in becoming more disciplined in our lives:

Start with shadaj. The long-chant of saa is the starting practice in the learning of Hindustani music. Saa is the short form of the Sanskrit shataj(popularly known as shadaj), wherein shata means six and j means born of. Thus, saa forms the base from which the other six notes are created, completing the entire scale.

With the practice of shadaj(saa), a singer is able to find his or her pitch. It makes the base for music and provides clarity in voice. One needs to practice shadaj in the morning for atleast five minutes, which could be challenging in the beginning. Your entire concentration is on saa, and the vibrations not only cleanse your body, but also purify your soul.

Through absolute concentration in shadaj, one’s mind is completely absorbed. For someone struggling to concentrate in work or finding oneself to be agitated, the daily riyaz of shadaj could do wonders.
