The ten trancendental Virtues or Paramitas part-1

The ten trancendental Virtues or Paramitas

Sunny Kumar
According to the Cariyā Pitaka commentary, pāramītas are those virtues which are cultivated with compassion, guided by reason, uninfluenced by selfish motives and unsullied by misbelief and all feelings of self-conceit. In Sanskrit the term paramita literally means having reached the other shore, or transcendence, or perfection
. Here having reached the other shore means leaving the shore of suffering and attaining enlightenment. The  paramitas were explained by the  Buddha, in the  Vajracchedikā Prajñā  Pāramitā Sūtra, to Subhuti and other monks in an assembly.

The way these paramitas were practiced by the Bodhisattvas has been illustrated in several birth stories or Jatakas. Initially there were only six paramitas but later on four more paramitas were added. The cariyapitaka and Buddhavamsa mentions ten
paramitas

The Mahayana Buddhist practitioner follows ten paramitasor perfection to improve oneself and reach the shore of freedom, harmony, and good relationship.
