Wisodms Winds Bridge-social welfare budhist organisation part-1

Wisodms Winds Bridge

WisdomWinds Bridge is an endeavour to showcase social causes undertaken by Buddhist organisations for the welfare of the society.

In this issue, we focus on Prajna Vihar School, a multi-faith school for children from poor families in Bodhgaya, India.

The Prajna Vihar School (meaning Abode of Wisdom) is an inter-religious school for children of poor families in Bodhgaya, Bihar. Students and teachers from various religious backgrounds are core part of this school. People connected to or part of the Buddhist Insight Meditation community primarily fund the school.

Teaching is mostly imparted in Hindi. Apart from teaching various subjects, ethics and dance, students are also encouraged to appreciate different religious traditions. The school is managed by a not-for-profit society, called the Prajna Vihar Inter-religious Education Society (PVIES)

The school began its operation in 1990, and till last year had around 560 students and 15 teachers. As per Sister Rashmi, “The school was started because of the relentless efforts of Venerable Anuruddha. From a small one room, it later expanded to the current location through generous donations from world over. The school especially gives preference to children of single parents and girl child. We are one-of-a-kind school in the entire region focusing on inter-religious faith, admitting students from different religion and traditions.”
