Completely away from those cheesy one-liners and clichéd romance of running around the trees and singing songs, the movie Waiting explores the theme of loss and undying love, while questioning the existence of human life through difficulties. A refreshing theme, brought to life by Naseeruddin s hah and Kalki Koechlin on the silver screen, that is untouched by Bollywood until now.
The entire scenario is based out of hospital, depicting the journey between life and death. The convoluted relationship showcased at the backdrop of survival is almost heart-rendering. The movie displays relationships from various facets–the hope to live and the instinct to fight– that comes to fore with Naseeruddin Shah as Shiv and Kalki Koechlin as Tara.
While Naseeruddin has been waiting for his wife married for the last forty years to regain her consciousness for nearly eight months, Kalki wants her husband to come-to-life at an instant. She is impatient, experated and edgy at same time.
And when the two characters meet, they start expressing their feelings to one another. Their agony, anguish and suffering had to be vented out and thus, the companionship explored in the story becomes the central point.
As both the characters bond over grief, their friendship transcends background and age. And the harsh reality of taking tough decisions in life keeps their attachment alive throughout the movie.
The movie also has a Buddhist touch, with Kalki chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo (a Buddhist chant) holding her husband’s hands.
Waiting throws a lot of questions at the audience. It provides perspective on various aspects such as wanting someone to rise from the state of comma–the question really is, are we doing it for ourselves or for our lovedone. Are we being selfish, for we don’t really bother about their post-hospital existence–not focusing on their quality of life but fuelling all our energies for our satisfaction? The question also revolves around the fact that if we pull the plug on our loved one, are we really giving tp on them?
The movie does not provide us with answers, it leaves the audience with questions, while the protagonists try to find their own responses.
