Six trekking myths you should know about!

1.Lighting fire the old fashioned way by striking flints or rubbing pieces of  wood is easy.m REALITY: It requires practice and oodles of Patience. Better carry a fire-starter kit match box/lighter, dry timber/camphor/cotton balls loaked in vaseline or petroleum jelly).

2 f it’s running water, it’s safe to drink.  REALITY: That might have been true 100 years ago, but not so now. That crystal clear brook right be teeming with pathogens. Always purify water before quenching your thirst.

3.All fruits and berries are safe to eat.REALITY:  as a rule of thumb, 90% of white and yellow berries are poisonous, about 40-50% of red berries are poisonous and about 10% of black and brown berries are poisonous. BUT WAIT!!! ARE YOU A CERTIFIED BOTANIST? IF NOT, DON’T FOLLOW THE RULE BLINDLY. YOU COULD DIE. you might just ingest one of the poisonous species of brown or black berries, and it could prove fatal.

4.Hypothermia occurs only in very cold climate. REALITY: Wet clothes, moist and cold atmosphere, and high elevation. That’s all it takes for hypothermia to seep in. Keep  yourself dry and warm. You will be safe

5 Hunting and fishing will keep you alive.REALITY: That’s John Rambo speaking for you. Are you trained to live off the land? Chances are that you could get SERIOUSLY INJURED or even KILLED trying to catch big game! Wild boars can rip you apart with their tusks, and a kick by that timid- looking deer will be enough to flatten you for good. And fishing! Are you carrying anything to bait fish? You need to know how to set up traps, read tracks and lastly, have patience. Seek help and try to reach the first human  habitation you can spot.

PLEASE NOTE: HUNTING IS ILLEGAL IN MANY COUNTRIES AND IS A  PUNISHABLE OFFENCE.

You have read books and seen it all on TV.

6 REALITY: Just because  you have seen Michael Schumacher blaze the F1 circuit doesn’t mean you  can be a race driver, too. Join a bushcraft community. Practice the basic skills at community meets. o fout on treks. Practice them in the wild. Ask veterans  for advice. Over time, you will learn the skills sell enough to mentor someone

Happy Hiking!
