As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), the cases of dengue have witnessed a manifold increase in the past 50 years. In the coming decade, it has been estimated that 50-100 million cases of dengue might be reported, and India might have the largest number of dengue cases.
As there is no specific drug or vaccine that can prevent this mosquito-borne disease, one may find a solution in alternative or natural remedies to control dengue.

- Neem leaves or Azadirachta indica: This substance is a great purifying agent. Applying its oil on a damp warm cloth with nearly 20-30 drops, 2-3 times daily would help in relieving the fever.
- Water: Due to excessive sweating, the body of the patient takes a heavy toll with high occurrences of dehydration. Drink as much water as you can for keeping yourself hydrated. It would also help in easing the symptoms like muscle cramps and headache. Water also helps in flushing excess toxins out of our body.
- Leaves of papaya: Although there are no clinical results for this, but papaya leaves are known for being a natural cure when dengue fever strikes. It is said that the complex mix of organic compounds and nutrients in papayas can help in increasing the platelet count. Along with it, high levels of vitamin C can help in stimulating the immune system. Crushing the leaves, straining with a cloth and drinking the concoction in the form of pure juice might be beneficial.
- Orange juice: The mix of vitamins and antioxidants in orange juice helps in treating secondary symptoms of dengue fever. It also helps in eliminating the virus from the body, and in promoting antibodies into our immune system, while releasing toxins.
- Basil or Tulsi: Basil leaves or Tulsi can be chewed for boosting immunity. It is a recommended Ayurvedic medicines for treating dengue fever.
- Fenugreek or Maithi: Fenugreek or Maithi leaves are said to reduce the fever. It also acts as a sedative for easing pain and inducing sleep in the patients.
- Barley grass: Barley grass is stated to increase the platelet count significantly by stimulating blood cells production. One may also drink barley tea to increase blood platelet count.
Although the cases of dengue are not always fatal, it is advisable to seek medical help in case the fever becomes critical.
