Nandi Visala Jataka The All-Powerful Bull part-2

Nandi Visala said, “Master! I have been with you for so long, have I ever caused you any loss? Did I injure anyone? Did I crush anyone? Or, did I defile your clean place with my excreta.

No, son!” replied the shocked Brahman.

“Then, why did you insult me by calling me wicked? If you have lost the bet, it is your fault, not mine.”

And, he again advised the Brahman—“This time, you should bet him two thousand coins. But, remember. You will not call me wicked this time.

The Brahman again visited the rich man, and bet him two thousand coins. A hundred carts were tied to each other like before. Nandi Visala was given good wash and adorned as before. He was once more yoked to the foremost cart. Now, the Brahman before riding the cart and driving the bull, patted it lovingly and said—“Well, you gentle bull, go.

Nandi Visala gave a vigorous pull to the hundred joined carts and dragged them to a considerable distance. The last cart now stood where the foremost one was.

The rich man lost this time. He paid two thousand coins to the Brahman. The onlookers also rewarded Nandi Visalain cash. Thus, the Brahman became rich on Nandi’s account.

It is said that no one welcomes bitter words –
Manunjameva bhaseyya namanunjjam kudacanam,
Manunjam bhasamanassa garumbharam uvaddhari,
Dhananja nam alabhosi tena cattamano ahu

(When you speak, do speak sweet words. Never speak bitter words. On account of sweet words, the bull pulled the heavy load. He—the Brahman—got money, which satisfied him greatly.)

In this chaotic world, we are full of emotions, but if we chose to react differently many issues will come to an end. If we react politely and calmly to situations, we can tame the aggression in us as well as others. Thus, ending petty issues like road rage, fights and quarrels, and bigger ones like war.
