WisdomWinds Bridge is an endeavour to showcase social causes undertaken by various organisations for the welfare of the society
In this issue, we focus on Mahabodhi Residential School in Mizoram, an school that is promoting education among underprivileged indigenous Chakma children at Tuichawng village, in Lunglei District, Mizoram, India.
To eradicate illiteracy and poverty among the indigenous micro minority Chakma community in Mizoram, a NGO named The Ultimate Truth Preaching Mission had been established. The same NGO has also been instrumental in establishing Ahimsa School for classes KG to Class IV and Mahabodhi Residential School for classes IX and X. These schools have been established for underprivileged indigenous Chakma children at Tuichawng village in Lunglei District, Mizoram.
Established in 2016, the school’s building was funded by Ven. Ananda Bhante of Mahabodhi Society, Bengaluru. The school is being run with public donation and with reasonable monthly fee. Mahabodhi Residential School is a co-educational English medium school comprising of classes IX-X at present. But classes from III-VIII will be opened gradually year-by-year. The school follows the syllabus prescribed by the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE).
The main objective of establishing the school is to provide educational facilities to the students who complete the elementary stage of education every year from Tuichawng andsurrounding villages, but cannot pursue their further studies by going to other places like Lungsen, Tlabung and Lunglei due to poverty.
The school gives high priority to involve itself in the nation building process by proving education to help the students to find suitable directions and opportunities for their development. It also aims to cultivate the child’s moral, mental and physical abilities necessary for his/ her future life and career by giving proper guidance and providing moral and spiritual teachings taught by the Buddha. The school considers it a priority to teach the students the values of honesty, love and their duties towards the society and the nation.
Besides the regular courses, the school aims at implementing extra-curricular activities such as singing, music, fine arts, games and sports. It plans to provide regular free coaching classes for weaker students in subjects like Mathematics, Science and spoken English to help students keep up with the fast paced standard of education.
Children are encouraged to develop the positive qualities of lovingkindness, compassion and universal responsibility. Rajesh Kumar Chakma, the founder of the school, is a teacher and President of the ‘The Ultimate Truth Preaching Mission’, who firmly believes that education is the birth right of every child, and no child–rich or poor–should be left behind.
Although the staffs of the school take minimum honorarium, the expenditure of the school often becomes high and the school authority faces financial crisis. At such times, the school needs the support of sponsors and volunteers to raise funds for keeping the school open.
At present, the school has a total of 96 students–60 boys and 36 girls. The staff consists of four teachers, including the headmaster, and one helper-cum-peon.
The school is raising donations for buying school materials, laptops and computers, along with providing monthly sponsorship for needy children and honorarium for teachers. The Mission has a plan to add the classes from class-III to VIII from next academic session-2017, and is looking forward to generous contributions from well-wishers.
